anyone living in costa rica that brews beer??? we are wondering if there are brewing supplies available there (for ex, malted barley? or will we have to make our own from bulk grains?).
also i heard that there were a couple of microbrew pubs in san jose and we'd like to visit them when we go this summer. anyone know what/where these are?
we want to start a small brewery (beer, mead) when we move there next year, so that's why all the questions. just starting the research...thanks!

Re: brewing
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 10:45 PMHey Jenn,
I have been in CR for over 5 months (pretty much all over) and have not had a nice, thick, Cali-Oreg-WA style micro-brew once. I have been in San Jose for the past 3 weeks working and have been to many of the pubs-bars in the area haven´t seen-tried anything that I consider ¨good-quality¨beer. So, if and when you move down here, you should definitely open a brewery; it would totally rock! Good luck and I hope that helped. Gab -

Re: brewing
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 9:03 AMYeah, we could SURE use some good beer here! Though I have to say I found a place in Plaza Cristal on the road between Curidibat and Zapote. Not sure the name of it, but they breer their own micro beer. I've heard it was good. I need to get my butt over there to check it out. You might also want to try groups.yahoo.com/group/CostaRicaLiving/ and ask one of the almost 3000 active members on that group. There is bound to be a brewer on there. Good luck!

Re: brewing
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 10:28 AMthanks, guys. koeby brews like magic. every beer he has tried out is perfect the first time around. and we just got to open and taste his first finished mead- a sparkling honey ginger mead- and it's the loveliest crisp drink i've ever tasted. (he is very modest so i make up for his modesty with my bragging!). anyway, yes, your support is helpful. if we can find a demand there, then that is what we are going to go for. -

Re: brewing
Sat, May 20, 2006 - 9:39 AMI can tell you for sure, all of my many friends here would LOVE to have a brew pub. What area are you thinking of building it in? By the way, I was talking to a friend about it yesterday and he told me about another friend of his who has been home brewing here for a long time. I'll try to find out his contact info.

Re: brewing
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 7:45 PMhey scott,
we are moving to the southern carribean coast, closer to manzanillo hopefully. most likely, we will brew at home and host open house tasting parties to start. then maybe build something more formal onsite, like a brewshop with tasting/sales room. then if that all went well, we would build the brewpub in or near to san jose, as i think other areas might not have the population to support it year round. grassroots style.
thanks for your help and support!

Re: brewing
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 10:16 PMHey Jenn,
I think the Carribean Coast would definitely support a brew pub year round. I lived in Puerto Viejo (9k from Manzanillo) for about 4 months and know for a fact that if there were any other choices of beer anywhere in the vecinity, all the locals that live there would frequent it regularly. Good luck and Pura Vida. Gaby -

Re: brewing
Mon, May 22, 2006 - 10:06 AMVery good idea. Test it out, so to speak. I think Gaby has a point about the PV area though (I'm on my way there in about 30 minutes). It might be able to support a place. Let us know for sure when you get things going so we can help support you!
