as we are gathering information and energy about this area, i am open to hearing from anyone who lives there- do you love it? what has your experience been of living there? we are a family with three kids, organic gardeners and chicken keepers, teachers, our kids go to waldorf school and home school, and we currently live in a place that it cold and damp most of the year. and unfortunately the cuteness of the town has turned it into a pristine tourist attraction that has become too unaffordable for us to live here!! so with all that said, i'm obviously just trying to figure out if this is the dream move that i think it will be (with some adventure, of course!)!!! maybe some of you can help paint a fuller picture for me...

Re: anyone live in the southern carribean coast??
Sun, February 4, 2007 - 9:08 AMJust returned from this area. There is a Waldorf School in Puerto Viejo. And a Butterfly preserve. Also, massage therapists, internet cafes, organic farm collectives, a clinica, markets, etc. You will not find McDonalds, Burger King, Circuit City or even consistent electrical supply. (We experienced two very short brownouts.) I did not visit the Pacific side which I read is the resort, trendy, expensive side. The southern Caribbean is the under-developed side of Costa Rica--mostly villages with Limon the largest town to the north and Puerto Viejo to the south at just a few thousand people. I stayed at Samasati Nature Retreat up in the hills above Hone Creek--if you're looking at a map. For me, this area is the place to be. I did alot of exploring. The jungle is lush and inviting. You can grow ANYTHING. The roads, however, are TERRIBLE. Full of potholes, gouges, rocks. However, and this is according to the locals, it's better that way. Keeps it from being developed too fast. This is a walking, donkey riding, bicycle tripping way of life. Cars, except for the necessary buses, are really a nuisance. You'll like it. So will your children. There are more and more expats moving in but quietly. Not the glitz of the west side. Some very subdued gated communities. But mostly tin-roof, wood floor, and open windows and doors. I'm planning to go back which is why I'm on this site! I want to find an intentional community either just getting started or operating to join now and move to in a few years. Good luck with your plans. -

Re: anyone live in the southern carribean coast??
Mon, February 5, 2007 - 10:14 AMHi there!
I have two great friends that live right out side of Manzanilla - very close to the border of Panama. They are a French Couple named JP and Domonique and they own a little spot called Come-A-Lot that offers cheap cabinas right on the beach. They have lived there for +25 years and would have an immense amount of information, plus they love to talk!
My observation from visiting them in that area is that the beaches are have the most beautiful chunky sand, the dead reefs make it impossible to swim without getting spiked by urchins, locals are overlooked while shooting up on the beach, the cops are extra shitty towards gringos, and I found that among the local people there was much more of a 'third world hussle" type vibe that I have not yet experienced in other parts of Costa Rica. -

Re: anyone live in the southern carribean coast??
Mon, March 26, 2007 - 8:44 PMI live in the Central Valley, but I work in Puerto Viejo and the Talamanca Indigenous Reservation. We have a volunteer program (www.mytropicaladventure.com) there and do lots of work with the communities there. I really love that area. The people are super nice, the weather is perfect (for me anyhow) and it's very laid back. If I didn't buy a place in Cartago before I went to the Puerto Viejo area, I'd have bought there for sure!

Thu, March 29, 2007 - 9:38 AMHola, I'm Tica and I live in PV all my life. The crime here is bad and growing. Specially with soo many gringos moving here. Please leave us alone, stay in you country, let Ticos be able to buy land, thanx to all the gringos that are coming here we are not able to do so. Please respect us and don't change our little home into gringolandia! -

Re: anyone live in the southern carribean coast??
Sat, May 19, 2007 - 5:22 PMHello, China the Tica. I can appreciate how you feel about people moving in, driving prices up, increases in crime. And I've met a lot of people myself who are from all parts of the world (sorry, all greedy people don't come from the USA) and want to take advantage financially of a growing tourist area.
But the truth is, there are many gringos such as myself who earn colones, support the community we live in in a positive way, love the culture and people of Costa Rica and are actually "good people."
I hope you have a chance to examine your bitterness about extranjeros and perhaps try to see the goodness in people without generalizing about them. That would be like someone from the US saying, "I wish all these hispanics would just leave. They are just here to take advantage of us." That kind of thinking -- no matter where it is or who is thinking it -- is dangerous and unkind.
In loving,
Scott
