Mail Boxes Etc. Costa Rica Announces It Will Send all Absentee Election ballots for the 2008 Presidential Election to the United States for Free.
There is no requirement or limit to this offer except that it will only apply to absentee ballots given to us before Nov 4, 2008. Here is a little information on what absentee ballots are, who qualifies for them and how Mail Boxes Etc. is helping to make it easier to vote for Americans living in Costa Rica.

1) What is the voting process for Americans living abroad in Costa Rica?
Every US citizen over the age of 18 has the right to vote for their elected representatives and the next US President (43rd) on Nov 4, 2008. If you are not able to go to the polling place in your home state, provisions are made for absentee ballots. An absentee ballot may be cast from anywhere in the world and must be mailed in by a certain date. The date varies from state to state, but the majority of states will accept absentee ballots post marked up until Nov 4, 2008.

2)How does the process work and what are the deadlines for submitting these ballots?
It is different for every state, but generally, a legal US citizen must request an absentee ballot from the state that they have residence in. Upon receiving this ballot, they must mail it back in before the state specified date. These ballots come with a pre-paid postage stamp that makes them free to mail anywhere within the US via the USPS. It is the responsibility of the individual to cover the cost when shipped from outside the United States.

3) How is MBE Participating in this process?
One of the services that MBE provides is access to the United States Postal Service for sending letters or postcards. We receive mail that customers want to send via the USPS and we send them to our UPS warehouse in Miami, where our personnel put a postage stamp on them and deposit them to the US Post Office. Staring September 1, 2008 and ending November 4, 2008, we are offering this service free for any US citizen to send their absentee ballot through Mail Boxes Etc. Costa Rica locations.

4) Any other detail that may be interesting
MBE is very proud of this program because nothing should get in the way of US citizens exercising their right to vote. By making this process free to all, we are fulfilling our US born charter. “There’s help in here. Real Help” We are also offering assistance in our stores for anyone that needs help to register to vote and receive their absentee ballot.
