I would love to go somewhere mellow and remote. Costa Rica sounds nice. I have a bit of money, not much, sure to run out fast, so how will I sustain myself? I don't need much, I don't need modern convinence or creature comforts, what jobs are available out there? How much does it cost to live out there?

Re: what jobs?
Tue, February 15, 2005 - 10:56 AMHi,
I hear that you can find sporadic jobs, but it is my understanding that it is difficult for a non citizen to obtain a job in Costa Rica. My cousin went down there with his wife (she is attending grad school there), but had to return since her could not find a job. I would say your best bet would be to start your own business to provide jobs for Costa Ricans. You're right: Costa Rica is mellow and remote. I hope to live there someday. Good luck! -

Re: what jobs?
Tue, February 15, 2005 - 2:18 PMfinally another post to this tribe. You're probably right about what you said, because I just contacted a business owner in Belize and he said the same thing, jobs are hard to come by for foreigners. He only hires Belizians. Bummer, I don't exactly have the capital to start up a business. I'm trapped here for another indefinate number of years. -

Wed, February 16, 2005 - 7:35 AMI know the feeling. I would love to live in Costa Rica or Belize. I don't have the capitol or the business knowledge to start my own business either. -

Re: what jobs?
Wed, July 12, 2006 - 5:58 PMI know this posting thread is old, but I was just thinking recently about all these great jobs that a person could do here. I have TONS of ideas to share. So if someone is thinking about moving here, let me know and we can chat. Just one idea for instance is a Spanish Language school in Puerto Viejo. It's a wonderful location, lots of tourists go there and there is NOT ONE school. Sure, maybe you don't speak Spanish. But lots of other people do. You could run the business and hire some teachers.
Anyhow, another thing I wanted to mention is that US Citizens can not receive a paycheck here legally. But for about $300 you can start your own corporation (called a "sociedad") and pay yourself out of the profits. It's totally legal.
Best of luck on your adventures!
Scott
