SANGHALILA DE PURISCAL – THE YOGA VILLAGE IN COSTA RICA
A few months ago we bought a spectacular piece of land of some 21 acres near Santiago de Puriscal, Costa Rica.
(Before that we built and ran the Pura Vida Yoga Center for 6 years.)
It has two distant ocean views of the Pacific, a dramatic close up valley and a mountain view and it is 1000m (= 3000 feet) in elevation, the perfect climate. It's on the road to the beach, just over an hour and a half drive.
The particular advantage of this location is that it's in a very peaceful and gorgeous country area, but only 45 minutes from all the major facilities like cinemas, discount shopping malls, banks, hospitals etc of San José and the Central Valley, 55 minutes to the international airport, on a very good road.
The idea is to create a small and safe community of conscious people who have an interest in yoga, meditation, healthy aging and conscious living, and want to be connected to nature.
The outcome will really depend on everyone involved, and how it evolves is open, it'll be an adventure for all of us.
We are very excited about the prospect of living in such a community ourselves and we very much hope that we can inspire others.
The vision is this: the entire property provides a womb like feeling. It will be segregated into 8 lots of about an acre in size, each of which has a flat area for house construction and plenty of space for flower gardens etc. Three of the lots have 2 house sites on them. We have already put in an access road to all the lots from the public road. The only access to the property will be through an electric gate, so it will be a safe ‘gated’ community.
This also means that as a resident one will be free to come and go, leave the house or rent it out for any length of time.
Each lot will additionally have ownership in a huge nature reserve and a magnificent orchard, both together are 8,7 acres in size, so everyone will own more than an acre in addition to their own lot. The orchard has been planted with mango, avocado, pejibaye, maracuya, cas, cashew, guanabana, lemon, orange, sweet mandarins, banana and papaya trees. As well there are now sufficient coffee plants to produce about 200 kilos of coffee each year; enough to keep the community buzzing through the year!
The reserve area rises from untouched rainforest in the deep valley to flowering trees, hundreds of them have been planted already, and then transitions to fruiting trees in the orchard area.
This entire area will be owned by a company, and each of the buyers will hold an equal share in the ownership. This way of doing things creates bonds between people and allows for an interaction and support with each other on a very practical level.
We will provide power lines along the public road at our cost and so facilitate a much shorter distance of power supply to each lot. Once the houses begin to be constructed we will also provide a yoga practice hall and a huge agricultural water tank.
All the lots are connected with a beautiful walking path to the yoga hall and to the reserve and orchard area. We have already started planting beautiful exotic flowers and heliconias along this path.
There is also space for a tilapia pond...
We think that this will be a beautiful paradise.
Puriscal, the little town closest to the property (10 min.), has already attracted an amazing community of some beautiful alternative people, quite a few yogis, who are doing home schooling and are involved in many other very interesting creative projects.
Buying property in Costa Rica can be a nightmare, with endless bureaucratic requirements making the process a lengthy, confusing and frustrating
experience.
All legal work has been completed to minimize these problems for the purchaser. Ownership of each estate has been arranged by placing it in a
company holding. The buyer simply buys the company and legal transfer happens by transferring the shares to the purchaser.
We can also assist with designers, engineers and builders.
As you can see, the basic structure is there; how it evolves is completely open. It's an adventure!
The 8 lots will be priced between $48.000 and $90.000, depending on the size and location of the lot and if there is an additional building site on the lot.
We are thinking to reserve a piece of our personal lot for a possible small resort of some 5-6 cabanas to maybe accommodate 10 or so students for yoga retreats.
